Sunday's Cool News

Volunteers are always welcome and much needed! Applications for teachers, assistants and other volunteers can be found here.

Oscar

Sunday's Cool and CFHI (Canadian Food for the Hungry International) are partnering to sponsor Oscar Gamarra Jaco.  Oscar lives in the suburban slums outside of Lima, Peru. In Sunday's Cool classes children will have the opportunity to learn more about Oscar and children like him, to pray for him and to give an offering to help support him financially.

Parents are asked to help their children support Oscar by discussing the privilege we have of joining the work of God in the developing world by helping children like Oscar.  Discuss the living conditions of Oscar and children like him. Pray with your children for Oscar and help your child to support Oscar with a monetary contribution to the offering taken in Sunday's Cool classes each week.

My Story:

Hello, I am a young boy. I have 1 sister and 1 brother. My mother is a housewife and my father is a street vendor. My health is good. I am in grade 1 and my progress is good.  In school, my favourite subject is drawing. When I get home from primary school, I help my family by washing dishes. I enjoy hobbies.

I live in the community of Rinconada del Sol, a slum area on the outskirts of Lima, the capital of Peru.

We have no running water, sewage systems or garbage collection in our community. Water is scarce and expensive; it is trucked in tankers and sold by the barrel. Our homes are built on rocky hillsides and made from woven reed mats, cardboard, plywood and brick that offer little protection from the elements. As a result there are many illnesses. Respiratory infections and diarrhea are the two major causes of death among children.

Activities of the Child Development Program are: Christian education, recreational activities with an educational content, outings, film shows, sport activities and VBS. Community leaders are trained to do health check-ups, teach basic sanitation, organize and teach leadership. Parents are encouraged to be part of the decision-making and to become involved in the programs.

Your sponsorship also provides me with tuition fees, school supplies and uniforms. The aim is to organize and strengthen our community to enable us to carry out development projects by ourselves.
